With a death toll of 1.5 million, the Iran-Iraq War ends after 8 years.
Japan's defense-spending becomes the world's third largest.
Soviets begin leaving Afghanistan.
A railroad tunnel is opened between Aomori on the Honshu Island and Hakidate in Hokkaido, Japan. The tunnel is 33.44 miles long and as deep as 787 feet below water. It was the longest underseas tunnel.
