In the Persian Gulf, a missile fired from the U.S. Navy warship Vincennes mistakenly shoots down a commercial Iranian airliner, killing all 290 persons on the plane.
King Hussein of Jordan renounces control of the West Bank in favor of the PLO.
With a death toll of 1.5 million, the Iran-Iraq War ends after 8 years.
Japan's defense-spending becomes the world's third largest.
Soviets begin leaving Afghanistan.
A railroad tunnel is opened between Aomori on the Honshu Island and Hakidate in Hokkaido, Japan. The tunnel is 33.44 miles long and as deep as 787 feet below water. It was the longest underseas tunnel.
